ALUMINA BASED FEMORAL HEAD FOR HIP JOINT PROSTHESIS
• Hip joint prostheses are widely used orthopaedic implants which are commonly used to replace the ailing hip joints of the patients who are suffering from Osteo-arthritis, trauma due to accidents, bone deformity or any other degenerative bone diseases.
• Standardised Ceramic hip joint prosthesis is a combination of a metallic stem made of Ti-V-Al alloy, alumina ball and polyethelene acetabular cup.
• In India most of the prostheses are made of stainless steel stem with metallic head which has the disadvantage of low life (~10 years) thereby requiring revision surgery.
• The latest development in Europe and Japan are prostheses made of ceramic head and Ti-V-Al alloy stem.
• Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute (CGCRI) has developed the technology for manufacturing ceramic heads of international standards.
• IFGL Bioceramics has tied up with CGCRI to bring this technology to the reach of numerous orthopaedic patients in India at an affordable cost.
• The Ceramic Hip prosthesis gives much higher life than metallic prostheses, Formation of foreign debris in the body also is much lower thereby reducing side-effects and is suited for all patients especially relatively younger people who may have to opt for Hip replacement operations.
